I'm loving this vintage 40's dress currently listed on ebay. Not only is it a great style with amazing details, but with that zipper front it's so perfectly breastfeeding-friendly!

Fabulous Home Birth Mom of the Day: Erykah Badu

photo from the New Yorker

Erykah is the mother of two children, and both were born at home. Here's an interesting quote I found on Mocha Milk where the artist speaks about breastfeeding her oldest child until the age of two:

"When I first had the baby, I was breastfeeding for two years straight, so we were together for two years of his life - every day, all hours of the day. So I was two people, and I eventually morphed back into one. Now he's part of me. He's very independent as a result of it. I thought it was going to be the opposite...I was very worried that he was going to be attached since we were together every day, but I guess it made him feel comfortable: 'I know she's around. She'll be there.' It made me feel like a very responsible person and tidy, and my health was better because I'm now responsible for someone's whole reason for being."

And just because I'm a huge fan of her music and personal style, check out the video for "Honey" from Erykah's new album, New Amerykah, Pt. 1 (4th World War):

Fabulous Home Birth Mom of the Day: Stella Tennant

"I am not afraid of hospital but I felt that if there were no complications with my pregnancy I would prefer to give birth in the familiar surroundings of my flat. I wanted to take as much responsibility as possible for the birth of my child."

If the photo alone didn't quite slay me, the text description for the Chadwick Flat Panel TV Frame did:

"Give your television the same bold presence as a framed artwork"

Fabulous Home Birth Mom of the Day

Thandie Newton quoted in O Magazine, March 2001:

"I had no idea what giving birth would mean to me. I thought it would mean endless, beating pain; anger at my husband and the world; anger even at my baby. And fear. That was the big one—fear of the contractions reeling off another round through my body. Fear of possible slices, stitches, injections, and drugs. Fear of my body being broken and ruined for a time. Mothers I spoke to consoled me with the promise that as soon as my baby was born, I would forget the pain. But you know what? I never, as long as I live, want to forget a single sensory moment of that extraordinary night. I claimed the right to my body and my experience, and got to marvel at the majesty of it. And every year as I wrap a birthday present for my girl, I will be thinking about our labor—hers and mine—and how magnificent we both were.
It all started with my wanting a home birth. It just seemed obvious: I didn't want the conventional picture of a woman on her back with doctors urging her to push. In fact, I didn't want my experience to be controlled by anyone other than me, unless it had to. I couldn't imagine feeling 'loose' in a hospital; it seemed too claustrophobic an environment, unfamiliar and forbidding. Even in the early stages of pregnancy, I knew I needed to be in a place that I identified with trust and safety, and in my home I could be whatever I wanted to be, whenever I wanted. If my pregnancy ran into trouble, I would find a hospital and readily hand the problem over to the experts, but with a healthy pregnancy, I knew who the expert was—me."

Wedding Inspiration

Ever since last week when I heard the great news that two of my favorite people are getting married, I have been in a wedding-y mood. Ever the procrastinator, I finally took my professional wedding negatives to the photo lab to be printed (yes, for those of you who are counting, I put that off for nearly five years!) and I started hunting for frames. Meanwhile, one of my favorite blogs, Love Made Visible, pointed me in the direction of a great site called Brooklyn Bride which pointed me towards a plethora of marvelous wedding blogs. I wish these resources had existed before T and I got married. Not that I would ever change a thing about my wedding day, but sites like this would have made the prep even more fun.

Here a few of my favorite atmospheric shots of our day, photographed by Shannon and Evelyn O'Hara.

Requiem For a Photograph

Perhaps you've heard. The Polaroid company has announced that they are discontinuing Polaroid film and cameras! This might not come as the most disturbing news to you, considering how easily you snap away with your digital camera and how cavalierly you instant pix-message your friends with your Blackberry Curve. However, pause for a moment and consider the unparalleled tactile experience, coupled with the instant-gratification and aesthetic unpredictability of the Polaroid. Now. Don't you miss it already? I'm positively misty-eyed. Check this site out for some ideas on how to work creatively through the shock and pain.

Ina May Gaskin Film

My mother just emailed me a great article profiling renowned Midwife, Ina May Gaskin and her upcoming film "The Orgasmic Birth." Check it out here. It is so exciting to see a growing interest in natural, Midwife-attended, home birth!

Pink & Blue Stuff

I just stumbled upon this fascinating project by artist Jeongmee Yoon, wherein youngsters are photographed amongst their own belongings -- boys with blue items and girls with pink items. The images are visually arresting and really get you thinking about our culture and gender issues within it. Check it out.
