Our Time Spring Shows

Photobucket
When Taro left home this morning, he was headed to the theater to start load-in for the Our Time Spring shows! I can't believe it's that time of year again already, but starting this weekend and continuing next weekend, you can see brand new original work written and performed by the Our Time pre-teen and teen companies. It's going to be a great run of really fun shows, and we would love to see you there! Click here for more info and to purchase tickets. Thank you so much for your support of this wonderful organization!

printing this out and carrying it with me

Happy Monday!

I adore this graphic.
I find it particularly relevant, in light of the this ongoing outrage in an Atlanta suburb.

Thanks for the tip, Joanna!

My parents were married 40 years ago this weekend.
They were just 20 years old at the time!

Here they are, more adorable than ever, on a recent trip to Italy:

Congratulations, Mom and Dad!
You guys are amazing, and a total inspiration.
Here's to the next 40 years!

Love you.

everywhere you look is life

Early summer days are a jubilee time for birds. In the fields, around the house, in the barn, in the woods, in the swamp -- everywhere love and songs and nests and eggs. From the edge of the woods, the white-throated sparrow (which must come all the way from Boston) calls, "Oh Peabody, Peabody, Peabody!" On an apple bough, the pheobe teeters and wags its tail and says, "Phoebe, phoe-bee!" The song sparrow, who knows how brief and lovely life is, says, "Sweet sweet, sweet interlude; sweet, sweet, sweet interlude." If you enter the barn, the swallows swoop down from their nests and scold. "Cheeky, cheeky!" they say.

In early summer there are plenty of things for a child to eat and drink and suck and chew. Dandelion stems are full of milk, clover heads are loaded with nectar, the Frigidaire is full of ice-cold drinks. Everywhere you look is life; even the little ball of spit on the weed stalk, if you poke it apart, has a green worm inside it. And on the underside of the leaf of the potato vine are the bright orange eggs of the potato bug.

rubysmith photography

My dear friend, Liz Rubincam, is an amazing artist who recently founded Rubysmith Photography, a small team of image-makers who love photography and storytelling, based in Victoria, British Columbia. Check out the Rubysmith website and be moved by the collection of beautifully candid moments captured there in Liz's soulful, documentary style. Just wonderful!

mammo+pedi

2011-05-20_18-15-57_293
I was in dire need of a pedi the other day, and was rejoicing at my good fortune when I found myself out of the apartment with two sleeping boys in their stroller! Like the opportunistic mama I am, I had just made a pit stop at Starbucks and I was about to head to the nearest nail salon when I ran over a bump in the sidewalk and woke up the littlest kiddo. Not fresh. But bless him, he woke up in the sweetest mood, just asking calmly to nurse, so I decided to carry on with my plans. After all, a massage chair seemed like a much more comfy option than the park bench planted on the median in the middle of Broadway. So we picked a color and plopped down at Refined Sparkling Nails & Spa for a snack and some relaxation. It was awesome! Clearly Walker and I enjoyed ourselves, and Jackson slept through the whole thing ;)

bubble wonder

Over the weekend Taro celebrated his 39th birthday! One of the ways we celebrated was by meeting friends and family in the park and playing with a giant bubble wand I made (using about $5 worth of hardware-store supplies, and following the surprisingly easy instructions given to me by my amazing, crafty-mama-goddess friend Ariella). The afternoon was unseasonably chilly and grey, but we were so focused on the bubbles, our spirits were as high as if it had been 70 degrees and sunny.

It was SO much fun. Taking turns manipulating the strings to finesse the biggest possible bubbles was totally mesmerizing entertainment, surpassed only by the joy of seeing the choice few rainbow-slicked orbs float, trembling, into the distance before popping. This will be a go-to activity in the coming months, I'm absolutely sure ;)

words for your weekend

Photobucket
“I’m not telling you to make the world better, because I don’t think that progress is necessarily part of the package, I’m just telling you to live in it. Not just to endure it, not just to suffer it, not just to pass through it, but to live in it. To look at it. To try to get the picture. To live recklessly. To take chances. To make your own work and take pride in it. To seize the moment. And if you ask me why you should bother to do that, I could tell you that the grave’s a fine and private place, but none I think do there embrace. Nor do they sing there, or write, or argue, or see the tidal bore on the Amazon, or touch their children. And that’s what there is to do and get it while you can and good luck at it.”

looking for a home

LIFESIZEMadeline
This is a sculpture I created years ago (2005, I believe?) which a friend of mine now owns. My friend recently moved and no longer has space for the piece, so he is looking to sell it. If you are interested in providing a home for this artwork, please let me know!

She's rather tall, as you can see in the photo below, taken in my old studio when I was still working on her:

If you are interested, I would be happy to send you more details, including specific dimensions. She is made of industrial wire fencing and rebar tie-wire, and is painted black. You can read more about my Wire Couture collection on my portfolio website, here. Thanks!

Whale Rider

Whale Rider is one of the most quiet yet powerfully affecting films I've ever seen. We just watched it on Netflix instant download for the first time since seeing it in theaters years ago, and I was overcome even more with this second viewing. A beautiful, heartbreaking, soulful, and completely original film.
