2 Months to go...

...and I just ordered my birthing tub!  Woot!

Tessa's here!

All year I've been keeping up religiously with Cole's pregnancy as it unfolds over on her husband's brilliant blog, Pacing the Panic Room.  Well, Ryan Marshall's latest post in the series announces the home water birth of baby Tessa!  I'm so excited I just had to share :)  Congratulations, Ryan and Cole!  Check out the entire sequence of belly shots, here.

Beautiful Body Art

I am going gaga over these stunningly beautiful images of children of the Surma and Mursi tribes (who live in the Omo Valley of Southern Ethiopia).  See more on the fantastic blog, Saharan Vibe.  I found this through the Facebook page of my New York neighbor Tam...thanks for sharing this great link, Tam!

The Kiddo's First Story (as told to Taro, last night)

"Two stars were walking in the park. Then the moon came. Then the clouds came. Then noodle pastas came. Then Dada came. Then I came. Then Mama came. They were all walking in the park. The end."

Weekend Wanderings

This weekend I'm...

admiring a beautiful project about making connections within a community...

enjoying these photos of babywearing around the world...

remembering the "moment when he was at his most amazing, his most otherworldly in a good way, his most lithe and eye-popping and wonderfully alien"...

thinking about getting crafty:  here's how to make a kick-ass friendship necklace and how to trick out your baby wipe stash...

swooning over the prettiest playhouse...

loving Heather's recent entries about becoming a family of four. Especially this one...

hoping you enjoy these links!

What do you have in store this weekend?  I'd love to know!

I Pity The Drool

Love love loving this Mr. T onesie from Bambinamia.  Found here.

Birth Without Violence

I have read the book (which is amazing) but was unaware that there is also a film, recently re-released on DVD.

Critical acclaim:
Suzanne Arms, author & filmmaker, says: "These films take you into the heart of the mystery of what it means to be born, and how fully conscious and exquisitely sensitive babies are from the start. Leboyer pays homage to both ancient feminine wisdom and the crucial law of the mother-infant relationship in shaping our life and culture."

"Leboyer is that rare combination of scientist, mystic, and poet."  -- Newsweek

"Amazing ... Birth Without Violence is a sensual experience, visually and verbally, as its poetic prose blends with the pictures like the unfolding of a happy dream ... The impact is strong, [Leboyer's] appeal inviting." -- Boston Globe
I want to see it!  I love how Leboyer articulates that the laboring mother need not relax, but must instead become like a Samurai.  Thanks to Kelly for passing this along :)

Five Dollars -- Holla!

What do these three basic maternity tees have in common, besides the fact that they are perfectly classic and available in a myriad of colors?  They're on sale for only five bucks.  Here.

My Lucky Day

I'm so excited, I just have to post about my good luck!  I recently won a giveaway on the awesome blog, Naturally Nina (do check it out, it's chock full of wonderful links and terrific goodies!).  Well, yesterday I received this adorable confetti necklace made from vintage beads by Blue Moss.  Isn't it sweet?  I can't wait to wear it!  Thanks to Nina at Naturally Nina and Michelle at Blue Moss (who also has a lovely blog).

Celebrity Babywearer of the Day

Jennifer Meyer Maguire (wife of Tobey Maguire) slings her newborn while out and about in Beverly Hills.  I'm thinking these Serena and Lily slings are mighty pretty, but they look so saggy and uncomfortable!  Your thoughts?  Via Celebrity Baby Blog.

R.I.P. Michael

Fun Press

I thought you might enjoy reading this press about the Our Time album release, which includes tons of great photos of the event (and the co-hosts)!  Photo by Peter James Zielinski, via Broadwayworld.com.

Unwinding

The album release was a huge success on Tuesday!  The special events room at the new Barnes and Noble was packed to overflowing with an eager and enthusiastic crowd that went crazy over the performances by the Our Time kids and celebrity artists.  It was a dream come true for Taro and I know that the reception exceeded his expectations.

The Kiddo and I were able to snag plum seats in the front row, so when Taro went up on stage to introduce Our Time and kick off the show it was just too easy for the Kiddo to jump up there on stage with him.  Hence, my two-year-old son became cohost of the event, a job that he seemed to savor almost as much as his dad!

After the CD signing, the three of us hopped in a cab and went to Dean's Pizzeria for a celebratory dinner.  By the time we got home we were completely tuckered out from all the excitement.  The next morning we were still pretty hung over, so Taro impulsively decided to take the day off from work and spend it recuperating and rejuvenating instead, bless his heart.  So, yesterday was blissfully spent wafting from one chill family activity to the next, sans computers, phones, and clocks.

It's amazing how much you can do in a day when you're not trying to "do" anything!  We started out by getting on the bus and heading downtown to the High Line, which the Kiddo and I have been raving about since our first visit last week, and which Taro was dying to check out.
It was raining lightly off-and-on, so we spent several hours walking the length of the park, alternating with taking cover under one of the beautiful covered passageways and splashing about in sunny puddles.  Watching the epic sky was a pastime in and of itself (you can see everything from the Statue of Liberty to the Empire State Building and beyond).

When we finally decided we needed nourishment (beyond the delicious oatmeal cookies and lemonade available at the little City Bakery pushcart up on the High Line, we descended back
to street level and entered the adjacent Chelsea Market.
The market has long been one of our favorite destinations in the city, but I can't remember the last time we spent hours there, drifting from one marvelous establishment to the next with no schedule or agenda.  It is so fun to be aimless!

While the Kiddo was asleep in his stroller, Taro and I decided
to splurge on some homemade ice cream from Ronnybrook Dairy,
a local, all-natural farm that makes the most yummy, subtle flavors of ice cream (after liberally sampling the offerings, it was butter pecan for me, coconut for Taro).  Later, we ate at a new little spot called Friedman's Lunch, which proved to be totally delish.

Once the Kiddo was awake, he made a b-line for the colorful wares of
Imports From Marrakesh, with its piles of vivid leather poufs piled inside and out, the rainbow of Fez tiles covering the floor, and a dazzling array of glittering lanterns festooning the ceiling.  The storekeepers were so kind and welcoming, interacting with the Kiddo, that we were lured right in and I decided then and there to put an end to my lifelong need for a pouf.  After all, they were having a giant 50%-off sale!  With the assistance of the staff, we perused every color available and sat on pouf after pouf, testing them out.

In the end, I got three small poufs -- one fuchsia, one orange, and one turquoise to scatter about the apartment.  The quality is really excellent (the poufs are hand stitched in Marrakesh) and I am amped to have several nice little places to roost my increasingly cumbersome pregnant self when I'm playing on the floor with the Kiddo!  Check out the store's website, here.

The last long stop on our market stroll was the recently-opened KicoKids store, which stocks the most adorable kid's clothing in a fun and inviting space complete with a play area.  The Kiddo was in his element exploring the two playhouses and all the funky, kid-friendly furniture, until he lay down in the middle of a bright red rug and looked like he had passed out.  We took that opportunity to move along, and carried him out of the store, indeed right out of Chelsea Market and on to the street, where we promptly headed home.

It was a glorious day in New York, and just the thing we needed to feel connected and refreshed after the recent peak of Our Time season.  Today, Taro returned to work, but he will not be staying late for the first time in quite some time.  And this Saturday and Sunday, he'll have his first real weekend (two consecutive days off!) in weeks.  Hooray!

Album Release Party TODAY!

I am thrilled to announce an exciting event happening today at 4 pm:  the official release of the new benefit album from Our Time Theatre Company, Listen.

Taro and many others have worked tirelessly on this album for years, so today is truly a long-anticipated triumph for us and our beloved organization.

The release is being hosted by the brand-spankin' new Barnes and Noble store on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, at 86th and Lexington Avenue.  The event will feature appearances and performances by many of the recording artists featured on the album, including Holly Brook, Michael Cerveris, Kelli O'Hara, Mary Testa, Sherie Rene
Scott, Daphne Rubin-Vega, and Michelle Weeks. Many of the Our Time kids will also be present, singing alongside the professional artists before sitting down for a CD signing.  Taro, the Kiddo, and I will be there, along with many friends of Our Time and we hope you will join us too, if you're in the neighborhood!

If you want to buy the album, it is available on Amazon and iTunes.  All proceeds from the sale of this album benefit Our Time.  Thank you for your support!

As of this week, The Society of Obstetricians & Gynecologists of Canada recommends that vaginal breech birth be offered (a reversal of its previous prohibition of vaginal breech birth). The SOGC's announcement also lays out plans to establish nationwide training programs so that physicians can learn the necessary skills.  Via Stand and Deliver.

A new and delightful blog:  Raising Foodies.

June is more than halfway over!  If you want to hang on to the beauty of the month for much longer than the next week and a half, maybe you should pick up this pretty little print.

Street Fashion on the High Line

Style.com just posted this awesome collection of photos by Craig of the always-awesome street-style blog, Altimira.  It shows the bona-fide fashion scene that has cropped up on the High Line in the week since its opening.

When I visited the High Line earlier in the week I was as struck by the superior caliber of people-watching that was clearly possible there!  It's really fun to see that professionals are already documenting the trends and flavors that are on display at the new hot spot.  Enjoy!
